the topic that really caught my attention in this short story was the fact that the oldest son sent his family a telegram saying that he was getting marrried but neglected to invite them to his wedding. the way his father was talking about it, the feeling i got was that the son was ashamed of his family's poverty and didn't want them to make a bad impression on the important people at his wedding. i think this is very superficial and unforgivable; unless they have seriously offended you, it is uncalled for to not invite your family no matter how unpredictable and embarrrasing they are. you don't choose your family but this family did seem very close; after all, they did raise the oldest brother and didnt seem to have any problems between them.
i suppose my real question is why the brother suddenly decided that his family wasnt good enough for them. they didnt doubt at all that he would eventually arrive so it would seem that relations between them were good. did the brother get a promotion? was there some other event concerning work that meant he was walking on eggshells and had to make a good impression? am i asking all these questions and accusing the brother of being a terrible person when he really had no choice and his hands were tied if he wanted to keep supporting his family through his job? maybe he had a good excuse; perhaps either of the two marriages that are mentioned for the brother were arranged. what if his boss's daughter wanted to marry him and the only way that he could keep his job was to make her happy? unfortunately, the story doesnt give us enough information for us to deduce which it is; we have to look to what we know about the brother to guess his motives. i think that the two most likely reasons that he wouldnt have invited his family are 1. he had a change of heart and decided that his success made him above them or 2. if he had invited his family his boss would have been upset and fired him which would have made life harder from his family. i personally think that the first option explains his actions; someone who regretted not being able to see his family could just have written them a letter telling him what was really happening rather than sending a last minute, formal telegram that was pompus, cold and not regretful at all. therefore, in my humble opinion, the older brother in this short story wished to separate himself from his family and continue with his career which is why he did not invite them to his wedding or join them for their night of celebration.
