The night of the festival
I thought that it was pretty bad for the brother to send the card in the last minute. I thought that the whole family was sad and somewhat mad about the brother telling them that he was going to be married on such a short notice. Also they were pretty mad about him not inviting them to the marriage party. For example, when the hajj sends the letter of congratulations the two girls rip it up probably because they were too mad and/or sad to send it to the post office. It was especially sad for the hajji because he was expecting his son to come to the festival, but instead Munir didn’t tell him that he was getting married. Also Munir was seen as an idol, such as in this quote, “Whenever Munir was mentioned, Nafusa would lower her eyes and smile.” Another quote that showed how important the brother was is, “Khadija said she wasn’t hungry. She preferred to wait for her brother, even if he did not arrive until midnight.” Both these quotes show how revered their brother is. In the end the hajji is trying to cover up why Munir didn’t invite them because of some “financial circumstances”.

I agree with you completely. Munir sending the telegram last minute WAS bad. There are a few possible reasons for this, one of which is Peyton's. The first possibility is that he just wasn't thinking. The second, Peyton's, is that he sent it late because he didn't want his family to have time to secretly come to the wedding or have time to tell him their opinion about all of this. The last reason is that he doesn't *truly* care about his family anymore and just decided to send them this short telegram stating what he was doing because after all, they ARE his family and it would be just cruel to not let them know that he was getting married and couldn't visit them! That last part was sarcasm. >.>
ReplyDeleteI agree about how important Munir was to his family. Those are some good quotes to support your statement. ^^ I can't believe Munir bailed on his own family. I feel so sorry for the hajji and the rest of the family. :(
