A Wife for My Son-Cole

This was another one of those depressing arranged marriage stories that always leaves me feeling bad for the main character and wondering, "Why do people even do arranged marriages?" I guess it is just a tradition, but all traditions end eventually, one way or another.  In my opinion, it is very rare to have an arranged marriage that makes both of the people happy in the end, and the people who usually end up the happiest are the parents of the bride and groom.  In this story, Fatiha is having trouble getting used to the fact that she is getting married even though she doesn't want to yet.  She knows it is too late to stop it, but at the same time she knows it is not what she truely wants to have happen.  Fatiha still wanted to do so much, and make a career for herself, but now she is being forced into a marriage and wondering what her new future will be like.  She is distressed and somewhat depressed that this is going to happen, but in the end she decides that she is going to get up and dance anyway.  I think that she does this to forget her worries, at least temporarily.

  2. i think that the results of the people involved in arranged marriages depends of the purpose of the marriage. in almost every case it is a matter of monetary gain for the husband's family (the wife's dowry) and of a good, successful husband who has connections that can help the wife and her family. but i agree in that i think the choice of who you marry should be entirely up to you unless you support your religion so strongly that you want your marriaged to be arranged (in which case the choice is still yours). i think that Fatiha started dancing despite her misery at the end because she wanted to enjoy the short time she had left as an unmarried woman.she might also have wanted to make it more about herself and done what would have made her happy instead of what she though would make her mother and father feel guilty.
lastly, i think that some arranged marriages can work but in the end the choice of which person you want to spend the rest of your life with should be entirely yours so that if you end up unhappy you have nobody but yourself to blame.
